Blake Kyler

8th Grade

Hello! My name is Blake Kyler (a.k.a. Mr. Blake; pronouns: he/him). This year I'm teaching 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies. Last year I co-taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELA with Mr. Schumacher. I am very excited to continue to teach BRCS students in my new role.

I am thirty-two years old. I grew up in southeast Texas, went to school in Vermont, then graduate school in California. My academic training is in Philosophy, where I have 7 years of experience teaching undergraduate students how to engage artfully and energetically with the English language.

As a teacher, I am committed to creating environments and relationships that inspire students to use reading, writing, and history to explore and deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them. I believe that as students pursue greater understanding and empathy in their reading, as they strive for greater clarity, coherence, and discipline in their writing, as they cultivate curiosity and respect for the past, they not only enrich their resources for self-understanding, but approach such virtues in their thoughts and actions more generally.

In my free time, I love to read and write, play Dungeons and Dragons, climb rocks, hike, snowboard, do yoga, cook, and spend quality time with my partner, Britta, and our cats, Leto and Ghanima.
